“It’s never too early to start preparing for higher education,” was the mantra echoed in the halls of LaTijera Academy of Excellence Charter School as they embarked on their First Annual College Fair. Students from every grade level crowded the multipurpose room for an opportunity to experience the road to higher education and attain college, career and financial aid requirements. Students and parents alike were on hand to receive the invaluable information.
“Including different types of future options was important for us,” noted LaTijera Guidance Counselor Brenda Echols. “We want to reflect positively upon all areas of their academic development. The Fair gave students an opportunity to explore the path that leads to the careers they have shown interest in; and will ultimately help them see the relevance of a college degree.”
Representatives from approximately 25 different organizations including colleges, universities, educational outreach programs, and military personnel offered stations with hands-on activities for students along with information about their institutions and give-a-ways. Many students came prepared with questions about college life, and career preparation.
The administration and staff at LaTijera are determined to plant the seed of success in every student. College does not have to be a four-year university; but it can. However, with a strong foundation and purpose for the future, it does not have to be out of reach for anyone.
